Defining performance improvement efforts in project management terms is extremely useful, not least because it provides familiar vocabulary so that individuals within the organisation can gain reassurance that the ongoing efforts have been designed by senior management with a specific end in mind. Difficulties along the way can then be viewed as a chapter in the story of change. Other benefits of using a project management framework include:

  • Timescales and budgets are set so cost / benefit evaluation is made possible
  • Deviations from the road map can be addressed
  • Senior management attention is more easily focussed on ‘high profile’ projects
  • Change Managers can be more easily assigned to specific projects

Or to put this another way - performance improvement is less likely to be successful and sustainable without a project structure because there is likely to be:

  • Less pressure for change
  • Less change management resources and skills
  • No clear vision or road map
  • No clear, actionable first step
